OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Australia has developed a reputation over the past few years as one of the strongest 40k teams in the world. With multiple top 5 placings, Gold and Bronze medals as well as awards for best sportsmanship Australia has demonstrated time after time that we are not to be underestimated! In 2025 we aim to expand on this legacy of success by putting together a team that exemplifies the highest levels of 40k.
Warhammer 40k is a social game that requires more than talented tacticians with strategic acumen, it also demands the highest levels of sportsmanship, comradery and integrity, all of which are rich within Australian culture.
Team Australia 40k seeks to blend these elements to represent Australia in its truest form on the world stage at the 2025 Warhammer 40k World Team Championships!
Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!
TEAM SELECTION PROCESS
Team Australia selection Outline:
This document has been broken into three sections:
1. Captain selection
2. Player selection
3. Coach selection
Caveat: Warhammer Team Australia is uniquely challenged on the global stage for Warhammer 40k in that the players make financial sacrifices larger than most other countries participating in the WTC. With this in mind, the Team Australia selection process must also consider the practical realities of the financial commitment of players, travel times and personal availability in addition to standard factors when selecting the team.
1. Captain selection
The Captain selection for the team will be as follows: Firstly, the outgoing team from the previous year will discuss, and those who wish to nominate as captain will be given the opportunity to do so. Nominees from outside the outgoing team may be considered if the outgoing player team opts to do so: in light of the fact that few Australians have the time and resources to consistently go each year. This is a closed discussion within the players from the outgoing team, and this is done to ensure continuity with the previous year, relationships with event organisers and to capitalise on valuable experience in international events. If more than one candidate is produced, a vote will happen with the playing eight. Individuals as candidates may vote as normal. In the event of an even tie, the outgoing coaching members will be invited to vote, with their votes treated equally with the playing eight.
2. Player selection
Player selection will rely on a mix of objective and subjective data, at the discretion of the captain. The following factors will be considered. An online application outlining expectations can be found HERE .
Objective tournament placings at events of GT or Major status
Objective tournament placings at Teams events of any size
Objective season rankings, both Oceana Circuit (for years 2024 and onwards) as well as ITC rankings overall and for factions
Subjective sportsmanship across both singles and team events, in particular approaches to losing games at events of any size.
Ability to commit to the time required for WTC prep (as outlined in the application document) and the financial commitment needed to attend the event, a declaration made at application stage
Previous experience, at state or even WTC level.
Upholding the ethos of a healthy and inclusive Warhammer 40k: though subjective there is a high standard required of those representing the Australian warhammer40k scene: this includes conduct both at, and out of, events. This point is particularly aimed at respect for others in the hobby community. This also includes respect for tournament organisers and tournament participants.
Final selection:
Using the above data points (objective and subjective), the Australian Captain then has discretion to select the team, with the final decision resting with the captain.
Forming a team is a fluid process, which incorporates those who are selected throughout the process in selecting future players, both for discussion and indeed votes if necessary.
For example: the captain may select a player (player 2) who will then be involved in the discussion to select player 3. Player 2 and 3, alongside the captain, then discuss player 4, and so on and so forth.
There is no specific reserved “positions”, for returning players or coaches though returned experience is valued highly by team Australia
3. Coach selection:
Coach selection will utilise the points outlined in section 2. With an added weight to subjective points, to better reflect the nature and importance of the coaching role. The position of “chief coach”, is a formalised one within Team Australia. The Chief coach will be selected by the Team Australia Captain. For the remaining coach positions, the Team Australia Chief coach will be invited to participate in, and eventually organise, the coaching squad to better form a coherent coaching unit. This includes being involved in the selection of coaches, with voting power equivalent to players in this regard. The timing of coach selection is also at the discretion of the captain, though it is recommended this occurs promptly in formation of the team as the coaching unit is an integral part of team Australia.
